Yes... you CAN be a beekeeper even if you live in a city!
Do you have an interest in keeping your own bees — but always ruled it out because you live in an urban environment?

Maybe you’re an environmentalist who is concerned about the sharp decline in bees and worries about the effects that’s having on our food supply, other animals, and our ecosystems.
Maybe you’re a restaurant owner who would love to harvest your own honey instead of having to buy it from other vendors.
Maybe you’re a teacher who would love to incorporate hands-on learning with some bee hives at your school.
Or maybe you’re a company who wants to keep hives on your campus or rooftop.
No matter where your interest in bees has come from, it’s never made it past an interest because of where you’re located.
Like most people, you assume that beekeeping is a country thing…
…where you need lots of land to set up your hives…
…and you need space to keep the bees away from other people.
Because they ARE bees afterall, right?
And bees are scary…
…and bees STING.
The thought of keeping bees in a city environment where space is tight and where other people might get stung? No thanks!
And so, while your interest in bees and honey stays strong, you’ve assumed that keeping your own bees isn’t something you’re going to experience unless you move out of town.

Fortunately…that doesn’t have to be the case!
You CAN keep bees in an urban environment — easily AND safely.
The key is knowing how to be a beekeeper specifically IN THE CITY.
…knowing what kind of colony you’d like to create…
…and understanding the equipment that you’ll need to get started.
And it also includes releasing a common misconception that bees are something to fear.
Sure, bees do sting, but they only have ONE stinger and not all stingers are alike.
With proper bee keeping fundamentals and protective gear, interacting with your bees can truly be a pain-free experience…
…and you’ll soon come to see that bees are actually very GENTLE!
Bees are, in fact, an interesting, safe, and ESSENTIAL species that needs to be supported.
And the truth is that urban beekeeping is a GREAT way to produce healthier and more productive bees.
The reason is that urban bees have access to greater biodiversity, resulting in a more varied diet and stronger immune systems…
…and urban beekeeping has been touted as a way to boost pollination and improve sustainability, food security, and biodiversity in cities.
Most people, though, get into beekeeping because it is so interesting — and it’s truly fascinating to watch the way bees work together to make honey.
Urban beekeepers are also able to:

The good news is… becoming an urban beekeeper has never been easier — especially since there’s now a step-by-step resource to show you exactly HOW.
A resource that will teach you how to pick the perfect location for your hives…
A resource that will help you decide on a hive and how to choose your bees…
A resource that will educate you on taking care of your bees, as well as what to feed them and how to create the environment…
And a resource that will teach you how to understand your bees, as well as how to manage them and how to harvest their honey.
If you’re looking for a resource that will teach you everything you need to know to become an urban beekeeper, smoothly and safely, that resource is HERE.
And the best part? It’s taught by Mark Walters, an urban beekeeper who’s been keeping bees for 45 years!

Hi, I’m Mark Walters…
I grew up in Madagascar and loved the huge variety of insects found there. In college, while majoring in French (my third language) and biology, a friend of mine said something to me that sparked my interest in bees and beekeeping and changed the trajectory of my life.
I had terrible allergies, and my friend said, “You need some local raw honey! Eating honey will probably cure your allergies.” His dad was a commercial beekeeper with about 1,000 hives, so it was safe to say he knew what he was talking about.
Well, I was intrigued — and I began studying everything I could find on honeybees and beekeeping.
That was in 1975. The following year I set up my first hive in St. Paul, MN, and after keeping bees and eating my own honey my seasonal allergies soon disappeared! To this day I no longer have problems with allergies. Since that first hive in St. Paul, I have gone on to keep bees in Long Prairie, MN, and in two cities in Madagascar. I now maintain 30 hives, all in urban Duluth, MN.

Urban beekeeping has been so rewarding for me — as well as my family — as it’s led to our family business called Miel Duluth, where we sell all-natural honey and beeswax products. We love providing our products to honey-lovers all over the world, as well as educating people about the importance of honeybees and the opportunities that urban beekeeping provides.
Urban beekeeping is so important because in order to be healthy and survive, bees need a good habitat and a varied diet, which can often be found in an urban setting.
This used to be the case in rural areas when there were many small farms with a variety of crops, but more often these days, there have been more large commercial farmers with acres and acres of just one crop. This doesn’t provide much variety for the bees’ diet, unfortunately, and also carries a risk of bees ingesting a variety of chemical fertilizers and fungicides, which can lead them to be weak and unhealthy.
That’s why I’ve become so passionate about letting people know that beekeeping is very possible and FUN in an urban setting — no matter what town or city you live in. Bees CAN be kept very successfully in backyards, on roofs, or even on back porches, and have great access to varied diets because of all of the gardens and fruit trees available.
My goal is to help as many new beekeepers as possible get started with urban beekeeping, and provide all of the essential information you need to know to make the process smooth, easy, and efficient. I want you to experience, like I have, how rewarding, relaxing, and fun it is to keep your own bees and eat your own honey (and maybe even make a little money selling it, too!).
If you’re ready to turn your interest in beekeeping into an actual practice and build a successful beehive or two (or more!), there’s nothing I’d love more than to show you exactly how to do it.
